IDENTIFY THE DEFAULT FUTURE

Combining executive and employees' expectations, experiences of recent events, and level of engagement, into a statement of the most likely business results over the next 3-5 years. This statement is what we call the “default future." Barring something unforeseen, it is what will happen unless leaders take extraordinary action. In every case we've studied, the default future is far less than employees' aspirations.

ARTICULATE THE INVENTED FUTURE

Synthesizing executive and employee aspirations to shape the best-case scenario: what could happen if everyone pulled together, maintained high motivation, and pursued the path of maximum impact. We call the result the "invented future."

MEASURE THE CULTURE—AND WHETHER IT WORKS

Analyzing people’s relationships to the default invented futures, resulting in a very accurate measurement of the organization’s culture. The culture is the single biggest determinant of performance.

UPGRADE THE CULTURE

Working with existing "tribes" (groups of 20-150 people), upgrading the culture until it embraces the invented future.
